Conference Boy & Incentive Girl

November 2009 - Posts

If there’s one thing you can rely on event planners for, it’s them thoroughly enjoying an event. Incentive Girl is sipping a much-needed coffee after spending the weekend with around 50 UK buyers at the Malta Forum and thinking note to self – when the crowd tries to convince you that pulling an all-nighter in the hotel bar is the best way to prepare for a 5am departure, it’s time to go to bed.
Highlights of our four-day trip to the island included Champagne and dinner at the fabulous Palazzo Parisio and the chance to test our thespian skills during a very silly teambuilding activity in Valletta. When not dressing up as knights and distressed damsels, we were whizzing over to nearby Gozo on a speedboat before risking life and limb on self-drive jeep tours of the sister island.
Of course, when we’d prised our trembling hands from the jeep seats, Incentive Girl was quickly revived with a lovely glass of red at a wine-tasting session by the sea. The mild Mediterranean climate certainly made a pleasant change to London’s torrential downpours.

What Bing Crosby would make of it I can only wonder. But I can't help admiring Eugenie Tham and her team of helpers for their brave attempt to turn White Christmas into an anthem for the events industry. Looking nothing less than sparkling in her Christmas tree costume, the Big Wednesday PR director and her assorted gang of reindeer, elves and angels are the stars of a video on You Tube which aims to encourage companies to book office Christmas parties. "I'm dreaming of an office party, just like the ones I used to know," they sing. Only the most cold-hearted Scrooge would fail to feel heartened by their festive chorus. Anyway, once you've dried your eyes (whether from tears or laughter), there's some fun to be had in trying to identify the faces behind the disguises. Young Guns' Dickon Gough shows off an impressive baritone voice in his role as Rudolph, while Elemental Design's Richard Elmer must have drawn the short straw to end up playing the miserly boss. Speaking of miserly bosses, it turns out that the Save the Office Party brigade paid a visit to the headquarters of BBC Radio 2 for a chat with Chris Evans in the hope of getting some publicity on the airwaves. Sadly, their hopes were dashed. Apparently, the ginger-haired DJ was unable to talk about the subject on air due to the BBC's own cutbacks! There's only one word for that... Humbug! And I'm sure Bing Crosby would agree.

No rest for the wicked this weekend as I flew to Morocco for the weekend in time for Sol Kerzner's fabulous celebrity launch party for the Mazagan Beach Resort.
Time for a chat with Kerzner himself, then a bite to eat in the sunshine alongside fellow jetsetters Lisa Snowdon and Donna Air before taking a tour of the nearby town with none other than Simon Le Bon, who impressed us all as he skilfully haggled over a beautifully decorated bag for wife Yasmin. Then back to the resort to glam up for the launch party.
Sporting my highest heels and LBD, I made my way through the labyrinthine hotel's corridors back to reception, where an explosion of colour, music and the sound of clinking Champagne glasses awaited.
The economic credit crisis was far from mind at the Mazagan on Saturday night - the bubbly flowed until dawn, no expense was spared on the service or decorations and the guest list was crammed with more celebs than a women's weekly magazine  (a tearful-looking Lindsay Lohan surrounded by burly-bouncer types - check. A stunning Naomi Campbell sashaying past - check).
Guests were treated to sumptuous canapes, a choice of restaurants, a wealth of live entertainment and a prolonged, if slightly smoky, firework extravaganza.
Then it was on to the resort's nightclub where I managed to sneak into the VIP area for a boogie with Yasmin Le Bon, Lisa Snowdon and Tamsin Egerton. All in all, a pretty star-spangled Halloween! - Incentive Girl
