The event industry has seen the introduction of the British Standard 8901 and is waiting for the International Standard 20121 to arrive. BS8901 asks the event industry to understand their behaviour in relation to economic, social and environmental factors and make changes to improve their level of sustainability without compromising their services. This standard has been incredibly successful and the feedback from the event industry, not only in the UK but around the world has lead to it being developed into the draft of ISO20121. ISO20121“is an international standard which will use BS8901 as its starting point and the 30 countries that are involved in this ISO process will contribute to the development of this standard so it will build on what BS8901 was and create a unique international document around sustainability” says Fiona Pelham, joint chair of the ISO20121 committee. ISO20121 will lead sustainable management practices across the globe and with UK industry already using BS8901; the UK is on track to have the world’s leading sustainable event industry.
