South Africa World Cup Countdown

Dragonfly Africa's Robin Mcleod gives an insiders view on the buzz and the build-up to the 2010 South Africa World Cup

The Big Five

What a ride! From day one, when the world’s attention was wholly focused on South Africa, to the current day, the day of the first semi-final, it has truly been an amazing experience. All the predictions of safety issues & logistics problems seem to have faded into obscurity, with the doomsday journalists suddenly very quiet.

What has been widely reported is the incredible atmosphere, the friendly locals, the well coordinated stadium access, the fan parks, the lack of crime and the ever present Vuvuzela (who knew a plastic trumpet could generate so much discussion), love it or hate it, it was synonymous with this years event.

With just 5 days to go till the final match, organization has reached fever pitch. Cape Town is today, a riot of orange, with an influx of Dutch supporters. Whatever the final outcome on Sunday, it is South African’s who have won, as we have managed to show the world that an African country can host a major event successfully and safely. Furthermore we have achieved a heightened awareness of what a fantastic and diverse country South Africa is. One of the most positive quotes I repeatedly overhead was, “I cannot wait to bring my family back here for a longer holiday”.

May the best team win!

Next step Olympics 2020?

That seems more like the Big Four, however (a) is the hands down winner as it enables you to remove yourself from stress, but at the cost of being wishy washy.
